Wednesday News!

Wednesday October 15, 2014

Well our Wednesday came and greeted us with more dreary weather.  We are continuing to grow and adapt to the classroom and become more acclimated to what we do when we are at school. I am starting to see fewer and fewer tears each week and more and more smiles which melts my heart!  As I said a few weeks ago I have scaled back on Wednesdays as we all get use to coming to school and the routines.  We are working on transitioning from one activity to another and learning to share and play with our friends.  We are making great strides and are having fun learning how much fun school is!!

Jesus Time: Today we continued our story about Noah and this is what we learned today….

Genesis 6
Many years later there were lots of people on the Earth, but most of them were bad.  One man-Noah-was good.  He obeyed God.  “I want you to build a boat, God told Noah.  Noah started right away.  People laughed at Noah because they lived in a desert and there was no water for the boat.  Noah just went on building the boat.  After the boat was built God told Noah to bring his family and bring animals 2 by 2 into the Ark.  After everyone was in Noah closed the door and it began to rain for 40 days and 40 nights after it was done raining.  Noah sent a white dove out of the boat and the Dove returned with a green branch signaling that there was green land somewhere!

We had the opportunity during free choice play to play with some Noah’s ark and all the animals he put inside them.

Number:  Number three is what we are studying this month.  We practiced making the number three with our fingers this is good practice for our finger and hand muscles.  We practiced counting to three and looking at what the number three looks like.

During center time got three orange leaves, 3 green leaves and 3 yellow leaves to glue onto a big tree stump.  We practiced using our fine motor skills, as we had to squeeze the glue bottle to glue our leaves on our paper.  As we glued on the leaves we counted how many we had of each color.  We also talked some of us would be turning three soon.

Shape:  We are learning about a circle this month.  We learned that there is no beginning and end to a circle and that we can think of many things that look like a circle.

Letter: We began working on the letter “F” this week.  We talked about words that began with the letter “F” like flower, food, fancy, fish, fun and funny.

During center time we colored a picture of a Flower and it should of come home in your child’s red folder.

Color:  Orange is our color of the month.  So we spent time during morning meeting identifying different things that were orange.

We had fun painting a pumpkin orange.  We also practiced cutting orange paper to glue onto a pretty fall leaf.

Music and Movement: WE had fun squishing our baby bumblebee, singing our ABC’s, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Jesus Loves Me.  We had fun jumping and Counting and learning the finger play 5 Little Pumpkins

Outside Time:  Since the weather was not nice again today we went to the commons area to play with the balls and hula hoops and to practice running, jumping and playing with our friends.

Patterning:  We continued working on our pumpkin leaf pattern during morning meeting.

During center time we stamped pumpkins and leaves to make a pattern with an orange stamp pad.  I would help start the pattern and the students would finish the patterns.

Enjoy the pictures from our day!

Free Choice Play
Today we listened to music from the Little Mermaid.  We had fun doing some new puzzles,  checking out the new things in our sensory table, doing some patterning activities, and becoming artist on our art easel.

Another new friend joined us today Ashley came to play and all my friends did a great job welcoming her and showing her how we do things in our classroom.

Circle Time
Singing our morning song!

We counted three red squares on our calendar we decided that there were more red squares then any other sqares on our calendar and that there were three which is the number we are currently learning about!

We read a book to help us prepare for a Fire Drill that we will be having soon.

Transition Time
We practiced listening for our names and putting our leaves on our empty tree.
This activity helps us learn how to listen, follow directions and wait our turn.

Snack Time
Before we have snack we wash our hands and those who are potty trained have the opportunity to go to the bathroom.  While we are waiting our turn we stand up, when we have washed our hands we sit down on the wall and listen to the song Mrs. Horn sings to us as we follow the directions.  We are doing really well with this transition time….after we are all done with washing our hands we either hop, march or walk on our tiptoes as we find a seat for snack.
The girls waiting their turn

The boys doing a great job listening

Having a yummy snack!

Circle Time

We read this funny book about the silly things dogs do from A to Z.

Our pattern for the month.

Commons Time

After our time in the commons we took a walk around the main part of the school.  As we walked up and down the hallway and talked about what we saw on the wall.  As you can see in this picture there is a large picture of Jesus that we saw today, we stopped and I asked the children who they thought this was and a few did respond Jesus.  We also met many of our much older friends as they were walking to gym class. We met the school secretary Mrs. Schmidt.  I feel it is important for the children to become familiar with the entire campus at Zion as well as the people who work on it.  We will be taking many walks through out the school year around the campus at Zion.

Center Time

Painting an Orange Pumpkin

Patterning Pumpkins and Leaves

Coloring

Counting and Gluing Leaves

Cutting

Transition Time
At the end of the day we need to take our leaves off our tree. So we have to listen for our name and we then have to find our leaf with our name on it.  When we do this activity I say the child's name and then repeat the first letter of their name and the sound it makes to help them find their name.  When they give me their leaf I ask them what color their leaf is so we can also work on color recognition.

Reading Time
After lunch we have a little time left so today I read the book Pumpkin Eye and we practiced "reading" books to ourselves.  Even though my friends can not read yet we are working on how to hold a book the correct way, turn the pages the correct way, use our loving hands on the book and look at the pictures and words on the page.  Reading is very important for children and it is never to early to foster a love for reading.  Having books available at your home is also a great way to teach children about the wonderful world of reading!

Our Wednesday went great and I look forward to seeing you all next week with your ORANGE ON!
