It's A Great Day to be a BobCat!!

Thursday January 29, 2015

National Lutheran’s School Week is being celebrated this week at Zion where not only is it a great day to be a Bobcat, but it is great that we are able to attend a school where we are able to learn about Jesus and all his wonderful teachings.  Today was Zion Spirit Wear Day it was great to see so much school spirit in our classroom Go BOBCATS!

We were busy this week finishing up our studies on the number 6, the shape of a star, the color white and our mitten pattern.  Next week we will begin learning about a new number, shape, color, pattern and new Jesus Stories.  Our theme will continue about winter but we will be incorporating Valentine’s Day through out the month of February.

We did talk more about snow and finished up our snowmen we started last week.  Be sure to check them out on our bulletin board by the classroom door.

We also during morning meeting are learning a new prayer to say before we head for snack and lunch it is called the Superman Prayer, it is to the theme song of “Superman”

Thank you, God for giving us food
Thank you, God for giving us food
For the friends that we meet,
For the food that we eat,
Thank you, God, for giving us food
Amen!

Ask your child if they remember any of the new prayer they learned.

Enjoy reading about our day and viewing the pictures.

Jesus Time: Today we learned about Jesus being baptized….
Mark 1:11
And a voice came from heaven, "You are My Beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

God Is Pleased

John the Baptist was a prophet who lived in the wilderness near Jerusalem. He ate grasshoppers and honey. His clothes were made of camel's hair, and he always wore a big leather belt. John was very wise. Many people came to hear him preach. He baptized them in the Jordan River. One day, Jesus came and asked John to baptize Him. John didn't want to because he knew whom Jesus was and that He was Holy. "You should baptize me," he said to Jesus. But Jesus said it was right for John to baptize Him. So John baptized Jesus in the river. When Jesus rose out of the water, the sky opened and the Spirit of God, like a dove, came down to Him. At the same time, a voice from heaven said, "You are my own dear Son. I am very pleased with you." Jesus invites us to be baptized, too. In Baptism, Jesus washes away our sins and makes us God's children.

During Center time we painted a picture of a white dove using blue construction paper, white glue and shaving cream.  It was a different way for us to paint today and we made some really pretty doves!

Number:  Today we concluded our study of the number 6.  We practiced counting six fingers. We practiced clapping our hands 6 times, nodding our heads 6 times, stomping our feet six times, jumping up and down six times and rubbing our tummies six times.  We also counted six snowmen.

Shape: We wrapped up our study of the star

Today we finger-painted a star that we will be hanging up in our classroom.

Color:  We reviewed the color White.  During Morning Meeting we identified objects that could be white and put them on our color board.

Our center time we used white paint to paint a dove to remind us of God descending from Heaven to see Jesus when he was baptized.

We used white shaving cream and glue to make a beautiful dove and we also cut white paper today to make a snowstorm.

Music and Movement: We had fun singing Jesus Loves Me, Twinkle Little Star, ABC’s.  We had fun singing Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee,  Silly Dance Contest and Jumping and Turning around

Outside Time: We went to the commons for a bit to play it was too chilly and windy for us little ones to go outside today.

Patterning:  We reviewed our pattern of Red mittens and Blue Mittens.

Science and Sensory:  The sensory table was filled with a lot of brown rice. We had fun feeling the rice, picking up the rice, dumping and pouring the rice from scoops to buckets and back into the table. We are working really hard making sure the rice stays in the table.  This is the last week for the rice table!  It has been fun but it is time for us to move on to something new.

We finished our snowmen today which led us during center time to put two eyes, a nose, a mouth, buttons, hats and scarfs on our snowmen.  They are all different and unique and look great!

As a reminder many things will come home over the course of the month but some things will not as this will be put in your child’s portfolio that you will get at the end of the school year!

Enjoy the pictures from our day!

Free Choice Play
Today we listened to the Finding Nemo Soundtrack and the Soundtrack from Peanuts Movies.  We had fun exploring and enjoying a lot of the toys that will be replaced next week with new and exciting things for us to play, learn and explore with.

Lacing Buttons
This is a great fine motor skill for students to work on.  From picking up the button stringing it through the button and adding to the string.  Not only is this working on our hand eye coordination but it is also allowing us to work on our colors, shapes and counting skills.

. Magnetic Board
This allows the students to experience a variety of different things on the board.  This month we had letters for the students to play with.  This allows the students to become familiar with the way a letter looks and what it looks like. We were also able to hear what the letter sounds like and the ABC Song.  We have had a lot of fun with the magnetic board this month.

. The race track has been a great toy to play with this month.  We have had so much fun playing with the cars going up and down the track and seeing how fast they can go!

. The Trains
This is always a popular toy for my friends to play with.  We have had fun building lot of different tracks and watching how the trains connect.

. Sensory Table
Has been the place to be during the month of January we have had so much fun playing in the rice table!  We have gotten really good at scooping up the rice and dumping from one container to another as well as from a container back into the table. We have had fun running our cars in the rice as well as burying blocks and other fun toys in the table.

. Block Building
Building with blocks has been a big theme in our classroom this past month. We have really enjoyed building towers, hotels, schools, castles, apartment buildings and anything else our minds allowed us to do.  We have worked on our counting skills and color recognition as well as our balancing skills as we build as tall as we can!

. The Climber
The climber has allowed us to work on our gross motor skills since we have not been able to head outside as much this past month.  We have learned a lot about how to climb on and off of the climber how to crawl in and out and how to go up and down the slide.  We have also had to really work on our sharing skills in this part of the classroom.

. The Kitchen Area
This has become a popular area with my friends this past month.  I have been observing a lot of imaginative play with friends.

. The Art Easel
This area of the classroom continues to be a popular place as well.  It is very rare that someone in the classroom is not at the art easel drawing, writing and creating during free choice time.

. Morning Meeting

. Waving Hello as we sing our Morning Song.

. We counted 5 red squares today.

. Mr. Weather Frog ready for a chilly and windy day in the STL

. Final Review of our number, shape and theme of the month.

Today for our review of the color board we were each given an object that was white and when our object was called we had to bring it up to the board and place it on the board.  This allowed the students to participate a little more during morning meeting.

. We did a great job filling up our white color board!

. Pattern of red and blue mittens for the month of January.  Wonder what we will see next month on our board?

. Today we listened to this story on a CD to incorporate some different media into our classroom.

. Transition & Snack Time
Last day for us to work on putting our mittens on the snowman.  We are doing really well with recognizing our colors and name.

. Commons Time

. Circle Time
We did things a little backwards today as soon as we finished our snack we headed to the commons to play and then came back to have circle time.  We had fun doing the Silly Dance Contest, sing our ABC's and read a story.

. We read this Story about Bear being sick and how his friends took care of him to make him feel better.  We have had friends out lately who have been sick so this was a great way for us to address this area.

. When Circle time was over we played a matching game to help us transition into center time.

Center Time
Today we listened to Two Piano Guys During Center time to help us stay calm and focused during this time of the day.

Cutting Up a Snowstorm
Today we had the opportunity to cut white paper that were in strips and glue them on a blue piece of paper to make it look like a snowstorm.  Our cutting skills are really coming along nicely.  Many of my friends are getting better at cutting independently and some are even starting to master squeezing out the glue on their own.

. Painting with Shaving Cream and Glue
We made beautiful Dove today by painting with shaving cream and glue to help us get a different feel when we were painting.  It was sticky and made it harder to move our paint brush around the paper.

. More art easel time
I love how they all take their time when they are at the board and it is so neat to watch them step back and look at their art work that they have worked so very hard on.  This has been a total experiment this year I was not sure what to expect and I am pleasantly surprised with the results it has had.

. Puzzles
This class loves to do puzzles and it is time for us to swap out our puzzles for some more difficult ones.  Puzzles are an awesome way to promote problem solving as well as how to complete and activity sitting down that is quiet.

. Sometimes it is just easier to plop down on the floor and finish a farm puzzle!

. Finger Painting
Today we finger painted stars that will help us decorate our classroom a little more!  This was great way to work on our sensory skills because we had to get "dirty."  Some students had a really hard time with this where others loved it!  We made some really pretty stars!

. Reading!
We had lots of reading going on today in our classroom.

. Mrs Wegner has become the resident center time reader.  I think she read at least 5 or 6 books to a variety of students through out center time today.  She has really been great with the students and it is so neat to see how much the students enjoy having her in the classroom

. Carson did a great job helping clean up the art easel today.

The Shopping Cart
When I put this particular item out this month I was not sure how well it would go over.  But we have had a blast playing with it.  We have toted cars, blocks, puzzles, food, baby dolls and just about anything that would fit in the cart around the classroom.  It is so great to see how well we are working together sharing and taking turns. Some days are better than others but over all we are doing well!

. Music and Movement
Jumping and Turning Around

. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony Finger Exercises

. Joseph wanted me to read this story that he had gotten from the book order.  It was a great book about the 100th day of school, which our elementary and middle school will be celebrating tomorrow.

. Transition and Lunch Time
Finding our mitten for the last time in January.

. We had a much better day today.  We wrapped up a lot for the month of January and will continue lots of things next month.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and make time to worship.  Remember Zion has church services on Saturday at 5:00 and Sunday at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 maybe I will see some of you this weekend at church. Blessings to you all and see you next week!
