Tuesday Fun!

Tuesday November 04, 2014

Well November is upon us and we are jumping right in learning all about the number 4, the shape of a cross, the letter G, the color brown and what we are thankful for.  We are also learning lots about the holiday of Thanksgiving.  We were excited to have a new friend join our class today.  My friends made Emma feel very welcomed and helped her learn the lay of the land and how we do things in our classroom.  It made my heart so warm to see how helpful  all my friends were and it shows that they are learning compassion and understanding of those around them.  We had busy, fun filled day in our class.  Be sure to read what we are studying and learning about and be sure to check the lobby for our beautifully water colored Scarecrows!

Jesus Time: Today we talked about how thankful we are for our church. We talked about how the church is a place we can always go to to feel welcomed and loved.  That Jesus is always there to listen to us.  We also learned how thankful we are for the two awesome pastors that we have at Zion, Pastor Mark Rouland and Pastor Jason Reitz, Zion has been so very blessed to have such great Pastors help us learn about the word of God.

During Center Time we watercolor a picture of a church to remind us of how thankful we are for such an awesome church we have.

Number:  We started learning about the number 4 today. During our Morning Meeting we were introduced to what the number 4 looks like.  We then practice counting our 4 fingers, clapping 4 times, jumping up and down 4 times, stomping our feet 4 times, rubbing our tummies 4 times.

Center time led us to using bingo daubers that were orange and brown.  We had to find all the number 4’s on our page and as we found them we would say the number 4.  This activity allowed us to become very familiar with the number 4 and what it looks like.

Shape:  We started our study of the shape of a cross today at Morning Meeting as well.  We learned that we can make a cross with our fingers and that it is made with two lines.  We talked about places we might see a cross.  Hopefully we will be able to make trip to the church this month to find some crosses on the wall in the church.

During our center time we had our thumb painted brown and we made thumbprints on the inside of a thumb so that we could become familiar with what a cross looks like.

Letter: The letter “G” is the letter we are working on the next week or so.  Today we looked at what the letter G looks like and sounds like.  We heard some words that start with G as well such as, Giraffe, Goofy, GO GO GO!!

We had the opportunity during center time to color a picture of a GOOSE.  We practiced saying the letter G and the “G” sound.  Your child’s letter G coloring page should have come home in their red folder today.

Color:  Brown is the color for November.  During Morning Meeting we looked at what the color brown looks like and identified some brown objects on our color board for the month of November.

During Free choice time today we painted a picture of a Brown Bear.  We talked about what kind of noise a bear makes and that they sleep all winter long and that their fur is probably on the soft side.

Music and Movement: We sang our ABC’s; Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Jesus Loves Me. We practiced Jumping and Counting.  We Roared like Lions, Squeaked like a mouse. We practiced a new finger play call the Five Little Turkeys

Outside Time:  It was rainy, wet and dreary outside today so we were unable to get outside and burn off some energy. We had the opportunity to play in the commons for a bit and then we took a walk around the main school to scope out what all was going on up there Be sure to check out all the pictures and captions that go along with them.

Patterning:  We started a new pattern for the month of November it was introduced during Morning Meeting of orange and brown leaves.  We practiced saying the pattern and counting to 10.

During center time we used the brown and orange bingo daubers to make a pattern on the turkey feathers of a turkey.

Science and Sensory:  We have had lots of fun fall things in our sensory table this past month and it will be in the sensory table next month.

Enjoy the pictures from our day!

Free Choice Play
It was an exciting day in our classroom.  Things had been moved around a bit, new furniture had been added and we had new and different toys to play with!  We listened to music by Michael Buble this morning.  He is like a young Frank Sinatra that sings a lot of jazz music.
Our new friend Emma cooking in our housekeeping area!
Susie working the cash register.  This toy was a hot item today in the classroom.

The trains were put a way for a while and the airport arrived.  The boys had a lot of fun playing with all the different areas of the airport.
Some new trucks arrived in our classroom as well that brought lots of happy little boys to play with them.

New shape sorters were found in the puzzle shelf!  These are great for our friends to work on problem solving, shape and color recognition.

The Airport was a happening place today!

We found bristle blocks on new table that was added to the classroom

We worked on our pincer grasp today opening clothespin and matching colors

More action taking place at the airport.

We had fun creating at the art easel with markers

New puzzles were done through out the morning

Pre-Writing Skills
Today we had to follow the maze from the Indian to the Pilgrim.  We learned some new words to add to our expanding vocabularies.  This activity helps us follow the directions and work on self control and work on holding a writing tool.

Tornado Drill
We had a mock tornado drill today.  We did a great job doing exactly what we needed to do!

Morning Meeting
We are ready to start our morning.

Our Number and shape of the month.

When we did the calendar today we discovered that the date was our number of the month and that there was four squares on our calendar.

Brown is the color of the month.  We pull them out of the bag and we identify the object and then say what color it is.

Mr. Weather Frog was ready for the rainy, wet, cloudy November Day.

Today we talked about how we are thankful for our church and our Pastors.

Our pattern for the month.  I read a book to the class but it went missing before I got a picture of it.  It talked about two friends who were waiting for the leaves to fall of the tree.

Transition Time
We have a turkey ready to help us recognize our name.  Each child was given either a yellow or red leaf with their name on it.  When the child's name was called they had to place their leaf on the right colored feathers on the Turkey.  This exercise is a great way for us to practice waiting turns, following directions, letter and name recognition and color identification and matching.

Snack Time
Please remember to send a cup in with a lid that is spill proof and a peanut and tree nut free snack.  Please try to chose a healthy snack for your child preferably not candy

Circle Time
We spent time singing our ABC's and learning about the current letter the letter "G" and practicing our letter sounds.  We also started learning a new finger play Five Little Turkeys.  We also read a Thanksgiving ABC Book.  We talked about the word Pilgrim we got to look some Pilgrims that I had brought in.

Heading to the Commons

After our time in the Commons we took around the Elementary School.  This is a great way for us to become familiar with the building, and the people that work in the school.  We also found some really neat things displayed on the wall.  Some of the people we saw today in the Elementary school were, Mr. Debrick the Principal, Mr. Marlof, the assistant principal, Mrs. Schmidt the secretary, Mrs. Bernardt one of our first grade teachers.  Mr. Tyler Debrick, a lunch room attendant.
We found some orange pumpkins on the wall. We counted three of them these were done by some of our fourth graders

We counted nine colorful leaves.

Nicholas spotted the Earth that the second graders have been studying about

The yellow school bus is always a main attraction when we take a walk.

The first graders in Ms. Bolt's class worked on their own Frankenstein pictures

We found a large picture of a man we believe to be Jesus.

Walking in the halls

We found this picture that looks like the season of fall that the kindergartners worked on.

Coloring
We colored a picture of a goose for the letter G and a picture of Mickey and Minnie Mouse getting ready for the first Thanksgiving.  Coloring is a great way to work on our pre-writing skills and color identification.

Cutting with Scissors
Today we had to cut a picture of a pilgrim, Indian, turkey or cornucopia.  Once we cut our picture we had to glue it together on a piece of paper in the correct order.  We had to work our finger muscles to cut with the scissors some friends needed help cutting with the scissors, other friends needed help holding the paper and some were able to complete independently.  This is also a way for us to work on learning some Thanksgiving terms….
