The Second First Day of School!

For some of our friends today was their first day of school and some of our friends returned for another fun filled day in Mrs. Horn's Room.  We have a really small class on Wednesday for right now.  With a class this small we are able to really devote attention to each child and are able to expand a little more on some areas!  We had another great day meeting new friends, painting, coloring and playing with new toys.  We started learning the routines of the classroom and the rules we need to follow while we are in the classroom.  Parent's Day Out is all about learning how to play with others and taking direction from someone other than mom, dad or grandma and grandpa.  The blog will be updated daily and you will receive an email each day your child attends telling you that the blog is updated.

Jesus Time:  Today we spent time looking a picture of Jesus and different things we may associate with him.  We started learning the song Jesus Loves Me and the hand motions that go with it.  This is something that we will do every week during Jesus time.  One of the objects we talked about today was a church, we talked about how we go to church to listen to stories about Jesus, pray and to learn special Jesus songs.   Be sure to check out our beautifully painted churches in the lobby of the Sonshine Center!

Number:  We started our study of the number one by holding up one finger and saying one.  We practiced counting 1 blue square today during our morning meeting.  We also got to use the glue bottles and glue one scoop of ice cream on an ice cream cone.

Shape:  We started our study of the square.  We talked about how it has four sides and often looks like a window.  We then had fun using blue paint and a square sponge to sponge paint blue squares to make a fun looking collage.

Letter:  Today we practiced singing our ABC's and colored a picture of all the letters in the alphabet.  This activity came home with them today in their red folders.

Color:  We are learning about the color blue this month.  During our morning meeting we identified different blue objects and during center time we had fun painting a picture of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch.  These beautiful paintings are in our hallway on the way to the cubby rooms be sure to look at them.  Two of our new friends  had fun painting their hands blue today for a special poem that came home with each child today.  Since there were only four of them and we completed all of our activities early they were given the opportunity to free paint a picture on a piece of paper.

Music and Movement:  We learned lots of new songs and had fun dancing and singing.  An old favorite was the Bumble Bee song and Head Shoulders Knees and Toes.  We started learning 5 little Ducks and Clap Clap your hands

Outside Time:  We did go outside today for a period of time.  We had fun playing in a water table that helped keep us cool and we had fun meeting some of our other friends from the other PDO rooms.  It was hot, we do take out their cups so they may get a drink as need be.  If you want to send in a water bottle labeled with their name so they may use it at snack and outside that is great!

I hope your child had a great  day I know that I certainly enjoyed myself and am looking forward to seeing everyone again!  Please enjoy our day through pictures below.

Free Choice Play
This is the time in the morning we spend exploring the classroom and doing a variety of activities that might be out for us to try.

The chalkboard is a great place for the children to be creative and work on building their arm strength by holding their arm up to draw on the board.

Sydney was busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen!  She made a delicious breakfast.

Sydney and Kate were practicing their colors with Mrs. Linneman

The zoo animals are a big hit as well.  This is a great toy that helps teach cooperative play

Sydney and Jack talking and getting to know each other

Jack and Sydney were busy making the balls go round and round the monkey.

Puzzles are a daily constant in the classroom it is a great way to teach problem solving skills and matching.

A group of puzzles will most likely be out each morning for the children to explore and experience.

PAINTING WITH BLUE PAINT

Today was Sydney's first day so she made a special keepsake of her hand prints to take home to mom and dad.

It was also Kate's first day as well.  This activity is great to work on learning the color we are studying about as well as a sensory activity because we had to get our hand painted.  We talked about if it was cold, hot, wet, slimy.

We then all got to paint a picture of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch and talked about how he was blue and what other things might be blue.

We then got to do some free art and were given a piece of blank paper and were allowed to paint whatever we wanted.

We paint a lot and it is a great way to introduce holding a writing instrument and we also work on remembering that less is more on our paint brush when we are painting.

Morning Meeting
This is the time of day we get together and talk about the day of the week, the weather, the number, shape and color we are studying as well as a Bible Story
Today we talked about the date and the color the date was.

We dresssed Mr. Weather Frog for another hot and steamy day in St. Louis

The number one and the blue square we are studying this month.

Our color of the month identification board.

Our morning Story.

Snack Time

Circle Time
After snack we have a circle time that consists of singing our ABC's, learning about a letter, going over letter sounds, working on some fine motor songs to strengthen our finger and hand muscles.  We also read a story and I draw a picture to help us work on color identification.

This month we are drawing things we see outside in the summer.  To help us work on identifying our colors
The story we read during circle time.

Sorry this pic is upside down, this is the book we use to help us learn our letter sounds.

Outside Play

Playing outside is so important for this age.  Many children to do not get enough exercise and outside time in the United States so we do our best to help children at PDO foster a love for playing outside.  It is a time to meet and make new friends, play on bikes and practice our gross motor skills of running, jumping, hopping and skipping.  We also are given that opportunity to explore and sometimes get a little dirty which is ok and good!

Today because it was so hot outside we were given the opportunity to play in the water table!

Center Time
This time is designed for us to work on and build upon the things we are learning and studying about in the classroom.   Today we water colored a picture of the church, sponge painted a collage of blue squares, colored and glued one scoop of ice cream onto an ice cream cone and color a picture of the letters of the alphabet.

Music and Movement
This is a time we get to experience new and different songs and to work more on our gross motor skills. Before Music and Movement today Mrs. Linneman and our friends were making funny noises with some of the blocks in the classroom.  It is great to see imaginations at work!

Sydney being creative and making some bracelets out of the blocks we had on hand!

We read a story about Sesame Street characters getting ready for a party and we had to lift the flaps to see what they had to do to throw a fabulous party.

We also read a book about planes and talked about which of our friends had been on a plane before.  Sorry for the upside down picture I am starting to think it is user error and to the computer!

LUNCHTIME
After our Music and Movement time we say a prayer and then get ready to line up to wash hands for lunch.  Each child has to pick a Mickey mouse to stand on before we can go and wash our hands.  This activity allows the children to learn to follow directions and learn their personal space.

ONE MORE OUTSIDE PLAYTIME!
We got to go outside for about 10 minutes after lunch.  It was hot and steamy so it was a short time to be outside but we still had a great time playing and learning more about our new friends.

As you can see we had a jammed pack day of fun and excitement and we are excited to do it again soon.  I look forward to seeing you all next week.  Have a wonderful rest of the week and stay cool this weekend.  If you are looking for a place to worship Zion would love for you to join us and for one of our services.  We are currently in our Summer Worship schedule which is Saturday at 5:00 and Sunday at 8:00 or 10:30.  We would love to have you.  God's Blessings on the start to a wonderful school year and I am truly blessed to be a part of your child's education.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at hhorn @zionharvester.org
