Wonderful Wednesday September 10

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

What a Wonderful Wednesday we had today in our classroom!  We started new letter, number shape and color today and had fun exploring and learning.  See below for descriptions of each area we are studying as well as pictures from our fun filled day!

Jesus Time: Today we continued our study of the story of Creation focusing on days 3 and 4. The following is an excerpt from our children's Bible.

Genesis 1:9-19
The Third Day
On the third day God was busy. He made puddles and oceans and lakes and waterfalls and rivers. He made the dry ground too. Next, He made plants. He made so many different kinds of trees, flowers, and bushes, that no one could count them all. God said His work was good.

The Fourth Day
On day four God put the sun in the sky to warm the earth. He saw that the night was very dark, so God put the moon and the stars in the sky. Then God Made spring, summer, fall and winter. All that He made was good.

We worked on making the next two pages in our Creation Book.  We had to cut a piece of brown paper for the trunk, then use glue to glue it on as well  as a flower and stem.  We then painted our hand green to make the leaves on the tree.  For day four we glued a moon, sun and stamped stars on our pages.

We also water colored day 3 and 4 and talked about all the different things that we saw happening on 3 and 4

Number:  We began our study of the number 2.  We practiced holding up two fingers, which could be a little tricky.  We then waved our two fingers in the air.  Then we practiced counting 1-2, then clapping our hands two times, stomping our feet two times, jumping up and down two times, rubbing our tummies two times and turning around two times.

Our center time activity consisted of us stamping two red Mickey Mouses' onto a large number 2. We also painted two red cherries.

Shape:  We began studying about the shape of an Octagon. We learned today that an octagon has 8 sides.  We even practiced counting the eight sides whew that was hard work!  Saying the word Octagon can be tricky but we will keep working at it.  We talked about how an Octagon shape looks like a stop sign and when we see a stop sign we need to STOP!!!

Our center time activity involved us using apple stickers to trace the outline of an Octagon so that we can become familiar with the shape of an Octagon.

Letter: This week we are studying the letter “B”. Words that we talked about that began with the letter B were, bumble bee, bear, banana, book, bird, Bambi, baseball, bark   We looked at what a letter B looks like and practiced saying the B sound.

Our center activity allowed us to have our hand painted the color yellow to complete the second page in our alphabet book we know have added a yellow Bird to our book.

Color:  RED is the color we are learning about the month of September.  WE started our morning meeting with identifying different objects that are red on our color board.

We also got to paint two red cherries for our center time activity that helped us remember what the color red looks like.

Music and Movement:  We continued to do songs that have to do with self-regulation.  We practiced jumping Turning around, clapping our hands and catching a baby bumblebee

Outside Time:  Due to the inclement weather today we were not able to go outside and play, but we did manage to skip the rain as we walked to the main building to play in the commons area. We had fun playing with the balls, hula-hoops, tunnels and running around with our other friends in the PDO Classes.

Enjoy the pictures from our day.  This class is so much fun they are very much a hands on group so we did a lot of fun things that kept our hands active and busy.  We welcomed a new friend to our class today and they did a great job making him feel welcomed!

Morning Meeting

Our new number and shape for the month of September

Today we discovered we had two numbers on our yellow square

Ask your child if they can identify any of these objects

Oh, Poor Mr. Weather Frog is ready for the soggy wet Wednesday

Our Jesus Time board

Book we read about Cookie Monster's Friends and counting

This week we added to our Morning Meeting routine with us learning a simple pattern.  This month we are working on an A-B pattern we started with a Red Apple, green apple, red apple, etc.  As we did the pattern I asked the children to help figure out what color came next.  When we were finished with our pattern we went back and said the whole thing.  We then counted how many apples we had.  Patterning is very important in early childhood and is something that you can even do with your child in the car.

Transition and Snack Time
Today each child was given an apple with their name on it.  When we finished praying for our snack we had to listen for our name to be called and then we had to place our apple on the board in the basket. When we were done we needed to find a Mickey Mouse to stand on.   This activity allows us to work on following directions, listening and patience.

Waiting to stand up to go for snack.  We had just all finished washing our hands.  When we start this process we are all standing up on the wall when we are done washing our hands we sit down so that Mrs. Linneman and myself know who has washed their hands and who has not.

Snack Time--Remember we are peanut and Tree Nut Free Classroom!

Puzzle Time
We enjoyed looking at books and doing puzzles on the reading rug after snack.

Circle Time
We had fun singing songs and working on self regulation.

Making of new friends

We worked on our letter sounds, and talked about the letter B

Creation Books

Water Color Painting of Day 3 and Day 4 of Creation

Jack was very excited to show me his painting!

Working on our Alphabet Book
B is for Bird today we painted our hand yellow to make the hand print of a bird.

Shaving Cream Fun
We had so much fun today with shaving cream and red paint!.  This was a great way to work on our sensory skills.  It was messy, fun, and made our room smell like a barber shop.  This class loves to get messy and that is exactly what we did!

Cutting and Gluing
We love to cut many of us are new at using scissors so we work on just learning how to hold the scissors, pick up the scissors and how to open and close the scissors.  Many of our friends need help so we use a technique called Hand -over-Hand.  This is where the teacher places their hands over their students and helps them open and close the scissors.  As we progress through out the year many of our friends will not need to use this technique and will be able to cut independtly.

Stickers!
We used apple stickers today to make the shape of an octagon.

Ending our Center Time with a little Free Choice Play

Final Book of the Day

As you can see we were busy with our hands and we were messy but we had a great day and that is what PDO is about learning, exploring and getting messy.  Have a wonderful evening!
