It is hard to
believe that we are into the last week of February! Time is flying by really fast. We had a great day in our classroom. We had fun exploring the toys, playing with
play dough, lacing big buttons, solving puzzles, building towers with big
blocks and small blocks. Imaginative
play is really starting to come out in our little friends and it is so exciting
to observe and watch.
Today we
started to wrap our study on the number 7, the shape of the heart, our purple
and pink pattern and the color of pink. We started to talk about the season of
lent and had fun seeing what some of our friends wore that was pink!
We are really
concentrating on sitting during our morning meeting and making sure that we are
keeping our hands to ourselves and not bothering our friends around us. We are also working really hard at using our
walking feet in the classroom we seem to be having a tendency to use our
running feet rather than our walking feet.
We still have
friends that are out sick in our Wednesday class so please be advise below of
our policy on returning to school after an illness. Hopefully all my friends will start to feel
better and will be back at school soon.
Many of our
friends have been fighting colds, coughs, fevers and snotty noses. As a reminder your child needs to be fever
free for a complete 24 HOURS before returning to school. With that being said we are really enforcing
hand washing, covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze and using a tissue to
wipe our noses.
Enjoy reading
about our day and viewing the pictures.
Jesus Time: This
week's Bible story comes fro Genesis 2-3
The first week in Lent:
Today we talked about how God created the Garden of Eden and that means
paradise. In the garden God planted two
Trees the Tree of Life and The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God told Adam and Eve they could eat from the
Tree of Life but they must not eat the fruit for The Tree of Knowledge of Good
and Evil, because they would then know all that was good in the world, but they
would also know what was bad in the world and this would make God sad. Well, Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of
Knowledge of Good and Evil and God was very sad and even though he had built
this beautiful place for them they had to leave. God wanted to be able bring them back to the
paradise and in order from him to do that he had to buy them back and he did
that at the price of his son. Jesus.
Number: We reviewed learning
how to count to the number 7 We practiced counting 7 fingers, counting 7
hearts, counting 7 friends.
During our center time we did a lot of different things with the
number 7. We had to place 7 stickers on
a heart shape face that had the number 7 as a nose. We had 7 pink and purple hearts that we glued
on a piece of paper to make a heart collage.
We made a pattern with 7 hearts and bingo daubers that were pink and
purple.
Shape: We reviewed our
shape the Heart this month
We glued hearts to make a collage; we put heart stickers on the
face of heart. We also did a fun
painting activity with the shape of a heart.
Color: Pink is our color
for the month we had fun placing different pictures on our board. Ask your child what pictures they placed on
my color board today. We are making
Morning Meeting more interactive so my friends helped my put all the pink
pictures on our board.
During center time we squeezed pink and purple paint onto a white
heart and then stuck it into a salad spinner and spun the spinner as hard as we
could to make a very cool looking heart! They are awesome looking and will be
hanging in our classroom for the next week or so as we get ready to change over
to shamrocks and rainbows! We also
painted a pink flamingo today and talked and looked at some pink flamingos on
the computer.
Music and Movement: We sang Jesus Loves Me, Twinkle Twinkle
Little Star. The Wheels on the Bus, Jumping and Counting, Bringing Home a Baby
Bumble Bee. We also sang our ABC’s and
listened to a lot of different sounds that we may hear on a daily basis. As we listened to the different sounds we
listed them on a piece of paper. Ask
your child what type of sounds they heard today.
Outside Time: With the ground covered in snow we did not get to
go outside and we were unable to head to the commons due to an event taking
place in there with the preschoolers. So
we had the opportunity to play in one of the other PDO Rooms. It was a lot of fun for us to play in a different
room with different toys
Patterning: We reviewed
our pattern today of pink and purple hearts.
We then during center time used a pink and purple paint dauber
to make a pattern on heart shapes.
We are continuing along our letter journey today we learned
about the letter I and made an ice cream with our hands for our letter Alphabet
book. We also learned about the letter j for Jelly Fish, we talked about what a
jellyfish looks like and that they could sting you and they live in the
ocean. Our letter study is to merely
expose the students to the letters of the alphabet so that they have a
beginning concept of what they look like and sound like. I am pretty impressed by how many of the
students know a handful of their letters.
It is never too early to expose your child to the letters of the
alphabet.
Sensory and Science was spent today creating and making heart
shapes with our pink play dough and cookie cutters. We also spent time talking about how the snow
is melting outside. We also did some
observing of the birds that keep coming to our bird feeders. They need to be filled again and hope to have
them filled in the next couple of days.
We also did some talking about flamingos and jellyfish and looked at
some pictures of them on my computer.
We are doing lots of exploring, learning and discovering all
types of things through out the day in our classroom. Everyday is an adventure and everyday is
different. Which is the beauty of
working with this age group.
Enjoy the pictures from our day!
Free Choice Play
We spent today during free choice play listening to a variety of classical music. We had fun coloring, playing with our friends and exploring the classroom. Next week there will be new things for us to explore, learn and play with in the classroom. I firmly believe in keeping the students engaged and like to expose them to a variety of different things if I can. After about a month we have had our fun with what has been in our classroom and it is time for us to explore, learn and play with new things.
. Coloring is a great way for us to work on our fine motor skills as well as our colors and pre writing skills.
. We have really enjoyed playing with the tool bench this month we have had fun learning how the different tools work and what we can do with them. It has been to watch the students work their imaginations with the tool bench. The tool bench has been used equally by the boys and girls.
. We have also had fun playing with the Dora doll house in our classroom. We have had fun taking Dora's family on car rides, eat in their home, give Boots a shower in the shower, and making sure Swiper doesn't swipe anything.
. Puzzles
We have had some fun puzzles this month and some have been more challenging than others. We have had to use our problem solving skills to complete the puzzles and it has been hard at times but we have all done a great job with the puzzles this month. Even some of the more difficult ones have become some favorites to do over and over again. Puzzles are a great way to work on those pre math skills, problem solving skills and spatial awareness.
. Each week we have new books to enjoy in our classroom and we enjoyed looking at them this week and are excited to see what we will be reading next week.
. Morning Meeting
We are working hard to stay seated and listening during our Morning Meeting time.
. Calendar time today we looked at which colors have the same number of squares we decided that red, orange, yellow and blue all have the same number and that green purple and pink all had the same number.
. Mr. Weather Frog was ready for another cold day in STL, and we talked about the possibility of more snow to come in the next day or so.
. Placing our items on our color board, be sure and ask your child what they got to put on the color board today
. A Pink Rose
. A pink pair of boots to match the pink boots that Claire had on today.
. A pink octagon that we remember we need to STOP at when we see.
. A pink pig that we decided we see on the farm
.A pink butterfly that we will be hopefully seeing soon.
. A pink heart to help us remember our shape of the month.
. And our pink star to help us sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
. Our finished color Board!
. We talked about how Jesus died on the cross for us to save us from our sins.
. We read this cute book about a pink pig who really wanted to go to school to learn how to read. The majority of the students did a great job listening to the story and were very intrigued by how Rufus the Pig was going to go to school and what he was going to do there.
. Transition & Snack
Last week to put our hearts on our heart board. We have done really well waiting our turn and listening for the first letter of our name and identifying the color of our heart
. A board full of love in Mrs. Horn's Classroom.
. Many of my friends will be off to preschool next year and so we are starting to really work on learning how to stand in a line. Even if we are not off to preschool next year we still work on this to help us next year be one of the "big kids" in the classroom.
. Commons Time
Since we didn't go to the commons today we went to Mrs. Derrington's room to explore and play with some different toys we saw some familiar toys as well. We had a great time while we played in her room. Thanks Mrs. Derrington for allowing us to play in your room!
. Circle Time
We came back from Mrs. Derrington's room and had a short circle time where we read a book, sang our ABC's and learned about the letter I and the Letter J.
. We read another book about our good friend Bear.
. Center Time
We spent this time listening to music composed for the comic strip Peanuts. We had fun doing a variety of centers and playing in the classroom.
Art Easel
. Playing with blocks and cars. I found it funny how they all tried to play in this tiny little area when we had this great big room to play in.
. Kate did a little light housekeeping for me.
. Hello Claire I see you!
. We had a lot of fun playing with the bean bag toss game.
. Letters on the Magnetic Board
. Spin Art
. Making Hand prints for our Alphabet Book
I FOR ICE CREAM
. J FOR JELLY FISH
. Painting a Pink Flamingo
Today we used a small paint brush to paint our flamingo. We practiced staying inside the lines and painting just our flamingo. We talked about how many times a flamingo stands on one leg. We do have them at the Saint Louis Zoo and I told my friends to be on the look out for them the next time they visit the zoo.
. Counting 7 stickers on a heart shaped face
. Working on our patterning skills
. Counting and Gluing
We were given seven hearts that were the colors pink and purple. We had to use our hand muscles to squeeze the glue out to glue our hearts down on our paper. We made some really pretty heart collages.
. Music and Movement
We had fun singing a few songs, we also listened to a variety of different sounds today and read a book about a Raccoon who learns to share.
. What a lovely day we had in our classroom today. All my friends are growing and continuing to learn so much. As we get ready to head in the month of March we will be learning and exploring even more than we have exciting things are to come as we approach the season of spring and learn about God's Sacrifice for us to continue to live in this beautiful paradise. Have a wonderful evening and stay safe and warm over the coming days. I look forward to seeing you all next week!
