This week we are celebrating the Week of the Young
Child and National Children’s Book Week.
We had fun today seeing what everyone’s favorite color was and we read
lots and lots of books today that our friends all brought to school. We also had fun learning more about the farm
and exploring the classroom and outside.
We are continuing our study of the farm and we
painted the sky for our farm scene and glued our red barns we had painted and
10 animals on our page. Be sure and look
out in the hallway for the all our great farm pictures. We also started our study of the number 10,
the shape of the diamond and reviewing the colors we have learned about this
year. We also did a small introduction
into Superheroes this week.
WEEK OF THE
YOUNG CHILD IS NEXT WEEK!
Students in
PDO-2nd grade will celebrate Week of
the Young Child on May 4th-8th. During
this week, we celebrate the blessing of young children,
especially all of the young children here at Zion! As part of
the celebration, there will be
optional dress-up days this week.
The themes are listed below:
Monday:
Sports Shirt Day-wear a sports shirt of their favorite team
Tuesday:
Favorite Color Day
Wednesday:
Spirit Day - Wear red or white or Zion wear
Thursday:
Stripes Day
Friday:
Mismatched Socks Day
Please
remember that these dress-up days are optional! If your
child chooses not to participate, he/she should be in Zion standardized dress
(K-2nd grade). If your child participates, he/she doesn't have to be in
standardized dress. It should be a fun week!
Park Day is scheduled for Saturday May 16 from 10- Noon at the Tot Lot Park off Kimberly Drive in St. Peters (directions will be given out next week). This a time for friends to come play and for parents to meet and get to know each other and exchange phone numbers for future play dates. Please be sure an email Mrs. Horn if you will be attending!
We had a lot of fun learning about the farm and all
the different things there are on the farm and the type of animals on the
farm.
Enjoy reading about our day!
Jesus Time: Today we started
talking about how Jesus rose to heaven and went up into the clouds. We also reviewed the Easter Story and what
happened after Jesus rose from the tomb.
Number: During our morning meeting we were introduced
to the number 1O and we counted our ten fingers and ten toes as well as ten
friends and 10 flowers. The ten flowers
we counted we then discussed how they were the same and how they were
different. Some were the same because
they were from the same color family and others were different because of the
colors they were. This is something we
have been focusing on more the past few weeks and we are doing really well and
finding things that are the same and different.
During our Center time
we practiced our counting skills, we counted out 10 farm animals and put them
on our farm page we are making. We also
counted 10 flowers to stamp in our flower vases for the last page of our number
counting books. These will start coming
home in the next few weeks!
Shape: During Morning Meeting we were introduced to
the shape of a diamond. We found out
that we can make a diamond with our fingers.
We also read a book that one of our friends brought in that was about a kite
and we discovered that a kite is the shape of a diamond!!
Color: During the
month of May we are reviewing the colors we have learned through out the school
year.
During center time we
used bingo daubers to match the colors on our sheet to decorate a flower. We used the colors red, blue, purple and
green. We practiced identifying the
colors as we found them on our flowers. We also played a color matching game
during one of our circle times we had to match the bow tie to the right colored
penguins.
Music and Movement: We
sang Jesus Loves Me, and our ABC’s today.
We did not do any other music and movement today due to our time outside
and the other activities that we had going around the classroom.
Outside Time: We did go outside today. We had such a good time playing this morning
early on the playground and it was so beautiful that we stayed out extra long
and then returned outside for another 45 minutes after we had snack and circle
time. We had a yummy treat outside when
we went out the second time today.
Patterning: We were introduced to a new pattern of
Spider man and Batman for the last few weeks of school.
Sensory and Science led
us to the sensory table for the last week of corn being in our sensory table we
will have something new and different in there next week. We also spent time talking about the birds
and bird feeder and we filled them up with some more bird food. We are all pretty interested in watching to
see when the birds will come and eat from the feeders. We also were introduced to lots of different
types of flowers today as we played a flower matching game on our magnetic
board.
We also made a special
Mother’s Day gift that will becoming home later in the week. So be sure to be on the look out for that
later in the week.
Enjoy the pictures for
Today!
Free Choice
This morning we listened to the How To Train a Dragon soundtrack as we enjoyed our free choice time exploring and painting in the classroom. Music has been a big part of our classroom this year, I have enjoyed watching how the students react and how they move around the classroom when certain types of music are played. This is the last week that the farm toys will be in our classroom, next week new and different toys will be in their place as we finish out the last few weeks of school.
Painting our Farm Scene
We worked on the next process in our Farm Project. Last week we painted the barn Red, and painted the grass green. Today we painted the sky blue and some of us worked on gluing on our barn and counting and gluing 10 Farm animals.
Hats, Hats, Hats
Mrs. Wegener brought in some treasures from her house today and donated them to our classroom! The kiddos had so much fun playing with them it is so great to see them using their imaginations when they are playing.
. They even got Mrs. Wegener to wear one of the hats as she read one of the new books in our book basket.
. Puzzles
Puzzles have been an important part of our learning this year and we had a few new puzzles to work with today. Puzzles are a great way for us to work on problem solving skills and are a great to do if you want "quiet time or rest time" this summer at your house.
. Last Week of Corn in the Sensory Table
We have really enjoyed playing in the corn the past few weeks we have had fun scooping, pouring and feeling the corn.
Before We Headed Outside we read our first book
. Nicholas brought If You Give a Pig a Party
We then Headed Outside
We had the whole playground to ourselves this morning we had fun riding the cars, playing in the rock pit and mowing the grass.
It was fun to see them work together to line up for "gas" in their cars. Another example of using their imaginations and working together! Gas must have been really cheap because they were all there to get it!
Before we headed back inside we sat down in the shade and read another book
Reese brought in Sheep in a Shop
We then Headed back inside for a little more Free Choice Time we had fun playing with the farms, puzzles and blocks
Morning Meeting
Good Tuesday Morning!
Mr. Weather Frog is ready for the warm weather that God is bringing our way
. Our Color Board was filled with Super Heroes that all have the colors we have talked about all year.
.
Our pattern for the month of May is all about the Super Hereos Spiderman and Batman
At the end of morning meeting we read the book Avery brought Hey Diddle Diddle
Transition Time & Snack
Today we were each given a Super Hero that looks like us! We talked about some of the special powers that the superheros have. We talked about what our super power is and that is to tell people that JESUS IS ALIVE!
Look at all these cool Super Heroes!
.
After Snack We read Carson's book he brought Christmas is Together Time
We started learning a new flannel board story about colorful butterflies
.
We then read the book Susie brought in Girls Potty Time
We then played a matching game of different flowers. Each child was given a different type of flower and when I showed their flower they had to bring up and match it to my flower. Some of the flowers we named were, Rose, Peonies, Lily, Dandelion, Crocus, Tulip, Daffodil, Daisy and Carnation. All year we have worked on expanding our vocabulary. By no means are they suppose to know all the words we have learned but the exposure will help them as they continue to grow and learn.
.
We headed back outside and started off with a yummy treat of colorful Popsicles to help celebrate the Week of the Young Child!
Julija found some wiggly worms that she was oh so eager to share with her friends
.
We came back inside and played a color matching game. Each child was given a bow tie of a different color when their color was called they had to find the penguin that matched their bow tie.
. After we finished our penguin game we read a book that Emma brought in about Curious George and the Kite
.
Center Time
We had fun listening to music from the soundtrack Rio during Center Time we did a variety of centers and were able to continue exploring the classroom.
. Dinner was being served at the McQueen Table it looked pretty yummy some steak and apples looked to be on the menu
Landry was the cashier for the restaurant and his outfit was completed with his pink Hat!
Thank you for the donation of markers! Someone graciously left me some markers to help us finish out our school year. So we had fun coloring on the dry erase board.
Bingo Dauber Fun
Each child was to match the colors on their page to decorate a flower. This was a great way to work on reviewing our colors and identifying the different colors we know. We also were able to work on our fine motor control as we had to try and stay in the dots. We made some pretty colorful flowers!
More artisit working on the dry erase board.
.
We had fun playing on the slide one last day!
Working on the Magnet board as a team.
Today we stamped 10 red flowers that were displayed in a vase to complete our number book for the year. Each month we have studied a different number and each month we made a special page dedicated to that number. These books will be put together and will be brought home over the next couple of weeks.
They got Mrs. Wegener to wear a hat again while she was helping our friends count to ten! Mrs. Wegener has been a true blessing to our classroom this semester and I am excited she will be returning next year on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays! All my friends love her and her love for them is awesome we all love her!
.
Working with letters and numbers on the Magnet Board. This is a great way for the students to work on letter recognition as well as just becoming familiar with what the letters look like and how they are made. We also are able to work on our color identification as well.
More fun with Hats these are two of our friends that will be off to Preschool next year at the big school. It has been amazing to watch each of my 20 little friends grow over the past year and as happy and excited as I am to see them go off to preschool next year I am sad that they will no longer be with me.
.
Farm Pictures
We painted the skies on our Farm Pictures this morning and by the time we got to center time we were ready to glue on our red barns and count out ten farm animals and glue them on our pictures. We had to select and count out 10 animals and then as we glued them on we had to identify the animals and then give the sound for each animal. This was another way to work on our vocabulary and counting skills.
.
It is hard to believe how much they have all grown this year! All my little friends will hold a special play in my heart and I will miss them all over the summer and look forward to seeing them all in the fall rather it be back in my classroom or in a preschool classroom. We all had our favorite colors on today too!
.
We finished our final circle of the day with reading Jack book he brought Curious George and the Pizza Party
Transition and Lunch Time
Today each child had to tell me the first letter of their name as they came to take their SuperHero off the board. Most of them are aware of what the first letter of their name is and it is something we have been working on all year. Many of the students know some of their friends first letters of their names.
.
We had a lot of fun today reading all the books our friends brought in. I can not say it enough but reading is so important please try and set aside at least 20 minutes this summer to read with your child.
We had a great day in our classroom we read a lot of books, learned some more about the Farm and started learning about some super heroes. We also did a lot of counting to 1O and talking about the different colors we have learned about. We also had to do a lot of reminding of using our walking feet and keeping our hands to ourselves in the classroom. We are nearing the end of the school year and things will be crazy and fun but we still need to be following the rules of the classroom. Hope you have enjoyed reading and viewing the pictures from our day. I look forward to seeing you all later in the week!
